Eligibility
The DOE SCGF is open to students who are U.S. citizens and will be at least 18 years of age by the time the fellowship begins (August 15, 2010)
Academic Status
To be eligible to apply, students must:
- be an undergraduate senior majoring in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, environmental sciences, or computers sciences; or a first-year or second-year graduate student in a qualified research-focused Master’s or Ph.D. program at an accredited U.S. college or university at the time of applying;
- be enrolled as a full-time student at the time of applying;
- have completed a baccalaureate degree by July 31, 2010; and
- have an undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of applying.
Qualified Graduate Degree Program
Applicants must be planning to pursue or be currently pursing a Master’s or Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, computer science, and areas of environmental sciences an accredited U.S. college or university. Applicants should demonstrate interest in pursuing graduate study and research in areas supported by the DOE Office of Science.
The Master’s or Ph.D. degree program pursued must require a research thesis/dissertation.
Selected applicants must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at an accredited college or university in the United States or its territories by the fall of 2010.
Students pursuing a Master’s degree must plan to pursue a Ph.D. in a qualified graduate program immediately following the completion of their Master’s degree.
Students who are second-year Master’s students at the time of applying are eligible for the DOE SCGF this year only if they plan to pursue a Ph.D. degree immediately following the completion of their Master’s and will be enrolled in a qualified Ph.D. program by the fall of 2010.
Graduate programs not eligible for the DOE SCGF fellowship include: joint BS/MS degree programs, DVM, MBA, MD, joint MD/PhD, JD, or joint JD/PhD degree programs.
Other Federal Graduate Fellowships
Students who are current recipients of another Federal graduate fellowship that provides tuition and stipend support are not eligible for the DOE SCGF.
Students may concurrently apply to other graduate fellowship programs; however, if a student has been selected for another graduate fellowship they must notify the DOE SCGF program. The DOE SCGF fellowship cannot be accepted concurrently with other graduate fellowship.
