The PPPL ACTS program is a six-week mentored research experience for high school and middle school teachers.
Your target applicant pool: Eligible participants are teachers of science in grades 6 to 12, with degrees in a science discipline, mathematics, or engineering. Participants are placed in a particular research project based upon academic preparation, teaching assignments, experiences and interests. Research opportunities include physics, engineering, electronics, computer science, and environmental science projects.
Description of the program: Participants will work with PPPL scientists, engineers, and Master Teachers. At the end of the summer, teachers can apply for $2,000 mini-grants for classroom supplies that support curricula developed based upon the research experience.
PPPL is a single-program national laboratory with the primary mission to develop the scientific understanding and the key innovations that make fusion energy a practical reality. We also conduct world-leading research along the broad frontier of plasma science and technology. PPPL is located in Princeton, NJ (Central NJ) and is an hour from both NYC and Philadelphia.
Support includes a travel/housing supplement and $800/week stipend. In return, participants are expected to attend weekly meetings with a master teacher, present their research to a seminar of their peers at the end of the summer, and provide reports of professional development and leadership during the school year. Funding is available for professional development to other teachers at regional and national conferences.
