Northwest National Laboratory
Chemical & Biological Signature Sciences Group
Requesting applications from science or engineering faculty members at
institutions serving students underrepresented in science, engineering,
mathematics and technology.
Project Description
The project will involve the development of analytical techniques for the analysis of active components in plant extracts. For example, we will be analyzing an extract that has been screened by the National Cancer Institute to be active toward a specific cancer cell line. We will be using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and assay to isolate and identify the active component(s).
Applicants Responsibilities and Relationship to Project
Applicants will receive support under the Department of Energy's Faculty Student Team (FaST) Research Program to work collaboratively with the project research team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for 10 weeks, starting in May/June. The faculty member will identify two undergraduate students from their campus to participate as a team in this undergraduate research participation program. The faculty member will provide leadership and/or advising support to students during the summer research activities and will participate in all endeavors as part of the research team. It intended that the faculty member will become an integral part of the research team and will support the project through the academic year on her or his campus. The FaST team will submit a formal research paper illustrating their accomplishments to be considered for publication in the U.S. Department of Energy's Journal of Undergraduate Research.
