One hundred volunteers are needed to monitor the contests including moderators (question readers), science judges, rules judges, timers, scorers and special awards observers. A scientific background is helpful for moderators and science judges but is not necessary for the other positions. The time commitment includes a one-hour training session plus time on the competition day beginning at 8:00 a.m. through noon, 2:30 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. Many volunteers like to stay for the entire competition as the final rounds are generally very exciting!

Other volunteers are needed to help set up the buzzer/lock out systems, prepare and distribute registration materials, tally scores and serve lunch. The pre-registration work session is scheduled from 3:00 through 6:00 p.m. on the Friday evening before the competition.
