This summer I was hired to determine how people are using the Columbia River for recreational purposes. Our survey team was to gather this information through observational surveys and interviews with people on or near the Columbia River. Since we needed to use humans in this research to interview them, it was necessary for AL Bunn, the principal investigator, to obtain approval from the PNNL IRB to use human participants. There were several steps to go through to obtain approval from the IRB. AL Bunn did go through the steps and obtained approval. All the steps that had to be gone through were necessary to protect to individuals interviewed and the survey team.
