Educators as Investigators (EAI) Program
Summer Institute: June 23-July 18, 2008 (4 weeks)
This option is for science teachers at grades 6-10 who prefer to work
together in a team as they create and conduct their own research project.
OPEN ONLY TO RETURNING TEACHERS This three-year program consists of a four-week summer institute and
significant follow-on interaction each year. During the first institute
research projects will be constructed and conducted by participant teams
in such areas as environmental chemistry, alternative energy, DNA studies,
microscopy, and spectroscopy. A specific group and team project may continue
over two or all three years. Participants will learn how to setup their
lab protocols, apply simple and advanced instrumental techniques to their
studies, collect and analyze their data. In addition, participants will
develop teaching units, satisfy professional development goals, take
tours, and hear Argonne scientists discuss their latest research projects.
Laboratory expectations of this cohort include: a strong desire to grow
professionally and to improve student learning, a full three-year participation
in all activities during the summer and academic year, the ability to
work safely and independently in teacher teams within the Division of
Educational Programs and its facilities, to bring and use a personal
or laptop school with wireless access, and to establish a priority to
stay connected to peers, mentors, and lab resources throughout the academic
year and the duration of the program.
