Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
Teacher as Investigator Program
July 9 - August 3, 2008

Become part of a learning community committed to enhancing the teaching and learning of science in midlevel classrooms! Join your colleagues in an exciting program that combines research experiences with the development of online student investigations that bring the research into your classroom. You will also implement leadership strategies to share your inquiry-based projects with other educators. In Fermilab's DOE ACTS program each year's activities build on the previous year's.

Fermilab DOE ACTS combines research experiences studying either cosmic rays or the prairie ecosystem with online inquiry-based student investigations and leadership strategies. After being placed in a research team you will experience what it is like to do science and to communicate the results of your research to other scientists. In the second year, you’ll work with experienced teachers to create an inquiry-based online project related to your research topic that integrates technology in a meaningful way. During the following school year, you will share feedback and guidance with your colleagues and mentors as you field-test the project with your students. In year three you will develop a professional development program for others. You’ll stay in touch electronically through the school year between summers, gather at professional meetings, and share your teaching and learning experiences. In addition to this professional growth, you’ll receive a weekly stipend, support for travel and living expenses, opportunities for classroom equipment and supplies and support to attend professional conferences.
