Exploring Physical Sciences at SLAC

This four week program for middle school teachers will combine an introduction to the exciting research done by this laboratory with a series of inquiry-oriented and activity-based mini-workshops. Three topics will be explored: Forces and Motion, Energy, and Matter. Teacher participants will work as teams of three. Each team will have a research mentor in one of the three major science areas of the laboratory: particle physics, particle astrophysics, and the science of matter as investigated by x-ray and fast-pulse laser studies (known at SLAC as photon science). The mini-workshops will cover material in the California, Utah, and/or Nevada physical science standards for middle grades; teachers from these three states are especially invited to apply. The research groups will investigate how these basic concepts are integral to the forefront of research at SLAC, and will develop and present a short lesson or activity on each mini-workshop topic at a level appropriate for their students.

We expect that the teachers in this workshop will return to SLAC for progressively deeper research participation and studies over the three years of their DOE ACTS participation. Selection will favor teams of three teachers from a single region who offer a coordinated plan to use their expanded understanding of these basic science topics in ongoing teacher development activity in their local region.
