Project Description

The Web-based Operations Status Board (WebOSB) project at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory provides command and operations centers with a method to acquire, share, view and track highly dynamic status information between multiple users and jurisdictions. We are working to expand this capability (http://webosb.pnl.gov/) in three areas. The first is to provide XML-based meta-schemas that will dynamically describe the definition, display and datum to transfer self-describing 2-dimensional (spreadsheet oriented) status information to other command systems via a standardized interoperability layer. The second is to apply the interoperability layer to expand on capabilities for acquiring and combining ‘similar’ status information from multiple jurisdictions into a single collaborative status board. The third is to include the transfer of dynamic geographic locations to web-based mapping systems. PNNL will involve researchers in each aspect of the systems software engineering approach for these efforts including: design, development, testing, and application.

Applicants Responsibilities and Relationship to Project

Applicants will receive support under the Department of Energy Faculty and Student Team (FaST) Research Program to work collaboratively with the project research team at the Laboratory for up to 10 weeks during the summer of 2006. The exact appointment period in the time frame of June to August will be scheduled by mutual agreement between the host division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the successful applicant. Faculty will be expected to identify a student or students from their campus to participate in the Department of Energy (DOE) FaST program, sponsored by the DOE Office of Science. The faculty member will provide some mentorship to students during the summer research activities. The faculty and student(s) must participate as a group. It is expected that the faculty member and the students become an integral part of the research team working on this project and that opportunities for continued collaboration may be identified.

Qualifications of Ideal Candidate

Faculty: Experience with the design and development of multi-user web-based systems.  Strong understanding of current collaboration technologies desired.  Knowledge about current efforts in commercial and government efforts in cross-system interoperability standards (OASIS EM, CAP, EXDL, DMIS) desired.
Student: Undergraduates should have proven expertise in the Java coding environment.  Working knowledge of XML also desired.  Working knowledge of commercial and / or open-source web-based GIS systems and their application strongly desired.  Students looking for experience in participating in all phases of a systems engineering approach to software development are encouraged to participate.
